Getting Down to Brass Tacks: Public Access and Data Policies

This face-to-face course will provide an overview of research funder public access policies for publications and data, with an emphasis on NIH and other federal and private organizations that provide funding to health sciences researchers. Participants will learn: how to get publications into PubMed Central and other relevant public access platforms; how to troubleshoot non-compliant publications; how to manage and report on publications per the funders' guidelines; data management and data sharing requirements for NIH and other federal funders; and what to expect when offering support for policy compliance to researchers.

1. Introduction to funder sharing policies (15 minutes; lecture)

2. Publication requirements (90 minutes; broken down by section below)
- Overview of major government and private funders (who requires what?) (15 minutes; lecture, demonstration)
- Focus on NIH: (40 minutes; lecture & demonstration unless otherwise noted)
-- How to get publications into PubMed Central 
-- How to troubleshoot non-compliant publications (demo and group activity)
-- Managing and reporting on publications in My Bibliography
- Focus on other relevant funder publication platforms (15 minutes; demo)
- Potential service ideas, with examples of implementation at UCSF and beyond (20 minutes; discussion)
