The overall goal of this course is to acquaint librarians with the development and history of predatory publishing tactics, look at predatory publishing in the scope of scholarly publishing, and provide tools and practice in identifying low-quality emails, journal websites, conferences, and book publication offers.

The behavioral objectives of this course include:

  • Recognizing how pervasive predatory practices have become
  • Educating others about the differences between Open Access and predatory publishers
  • Identifying markers of low-quality journals, websites, emails, and book offers
  • Confidently answering patrons' questions regarding scholarly publishing

This is a face-to-face course that includes didactic and hands-on work.  Participants are required to provide their own laptops and connect to the Internet.

There are no prerequisites for this course.
