PubMed Essentials - On Demand*

PubMed is a free resource that provides access to MEDLINE, the National Library of Medicine's database of citations and abstracts in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care systems, and pre-clinical sciences. If you’re new to PubMed or just want a refresher this online class is designed for you. The course covers the basics and progresses through a few advanced topics about retrieving systematic reviews and treatment citations.

The class is made up of 13 units that include very short videos, exercises and quizzes. Students must complete certain activities before moving on to the next unit. The class gives you the chance to explore PubMed at your own pace with guided tours and exercises. Instructor feedback is available. The class is offered in Moodle, the NNLM's course management system.

Learning Objectives

After viewing the 13 video modules and completing the embedded exercises, librarians will  be able to help  health information consumers locate connections to medical journal citations in PubMed from a MedlinePlus health topic page. Upon completion of the class, students will have gained a solid knowledge of the scope of PubMed and how to run a PubMed search that retrieves relevant citations.
