How PubMed Works On-Demand: Selection*

During this class we'll look at the roles and responsibilities of NLM in collecting and providing access to biomedical literature, including the NLM process for evaluating publishers. This class will describe the difference between PubMed, MEDLINE and PubMed Central (PMC) and explore the selection criteria and process for MEDLINE and PMC. Attend this class to learn what is meant by “publish or perish” in academia and how this affects and is affected by publishing. We'll describe three different models of publishing and we'll look at the impact that funder and institutional policies have on access to research results.

  • Articulate NLM responsibilities and practices in collecting and providing access to the biomedical literature.
  • Explain what is referenced in the PubMed database.
  • Describe the selection criteria for the different components of the PubMed database.
  • Find additional resources for authors and librarians on assessing publication quality.
