Critical Appraisal of Diagnosis Studies (Recording)
In this interactive webinar, the presenters will guide participants through the critical appraisal of a diagnosis study. During this session, participants will gain exposure to plain language definitions and explanations for concepts including (but not limited to) nomograms, likelihood ratios, sensitivity, and specificity. Additionally, participants will gain the skills necessary to assess the methodological rigor of a study on diagnostic tests and identify resources for learning more after the webinar. Having learned these skills, participants will be able to discuss the application of results on patient care/populations. We'll also discuss teaching strategies and non-teaching applications for these skills.
Learning Outcomes

Define and calculate likelihood ratios, sensitivity and specificity, negative and positive predictive values, and pre/post test probability

Assess the internal validity of a study on diagnostic tests.

This session is designed for any librarian that is looking to learn more about critically appraising diagnosis studies.
Presenters
Amy Blevins oversees research, liaison, education, and data services at the Ruth Lilly Medical Library at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM)–Indianapolis. Since 2017, Blevins has served as the thread director for evidence-based medicine (EBM) for IUSM. She has worked on more than fourteen published systematic reviews and coedited the book, Curriculum-Based Library Instruction: From Cultivating Faculty Relationships to Assessment.
Laura Menard is the assistant director for medical education and access services at the Ruth Lilly Medical Library, serving IUSM–Indianapolis. She designs EBM curriculum components, delivers instruction, and trains colleagues on new concepts and instruction best practices.
