Collection Development: Subscribing to and Renewing Electronic Resources

A health sciences library’s most valuable resources are the ones that provide the most current medical information and are most easily accessed, its electronic journals and databases. How does a librarian acquire these types of resources and make renewal decisions about them? 

Collection Development: Subscribing to and Renewing Electronic Resources will walk you through the key steps a collection development librarian takes to subscribe to and renew electronic resources, from understanding an institution’s technical requirements, to negotiating with a vendor on pricing and licensing, to analyzing usage statistics and bibliometric data. You’ll learn the importance of gathering quantitative and qualitative information to make informed collections decisions so that you can better identify and provide access to key resources while also being a good steward of collections funds.

 The course includes:

Learning Outcomes

After you have completed the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify your library’s technical requirements for electronic resources
  • Discuss licensing terms, pricing, and technical requirements with vendors
  • Make evidence-based collections decisions

Medical librarians and other information professionals and LIS students with little or no training or experience in selecting and licensing electronic resources.

Subject Matter Expert 

Sarah McClung is the head of collection development at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) where she oversees the advancement of the Library’s extensive collection of health sciences resources and serves as the interlibrary services manager. She represents UCSF on many UC-wide groups, including the Shared Content Leadership Group, to collaborate on consortial collection development and management decision making. She has held multiple leadership positions in the Northern California and Nevada Medical Library Group and the Librarians Association of the University of California and is frequently invited to present at library conferences. She has worked in academic health sciences libraries for over a decade.
