Collection Development: Subscribing to and Renewing Electronic Resources

This course is open for registration.

A health sciences library’s most valuable resources are the ones that provide the most current medical information and are most easily accessed, its electronic journals and databases. How does a librarian acquire these types of resources and make renewal decisions about them?

Collection Development: Subscribing to and Renewing Electronic Resources will walk you through the key steps a collection development librarian takes to subscribe to and renew electronic resources, from understanding an institution’s technical requirements, to negotiating with a vendor on pricing and licensing, to analyzing usage statistics and bibliometric data. You’ll learn the importance of gathering quantitative and qualitative information to make informed collections decisions so that you can better identify and provide access to key resources while also being a good steward of collections funds.

 The course includes:

  • A realistic scenario that you interact with to learn and practice skills
  • Self-assessment of skills, pre and post
  • Recommended readings & resources, including a 30 page Collection Development Guide
  • Downloadable job aids
  • A practice exercise
