PubMed for Librarians is made up of six, 90-minute, live webinars. Each session is presented via WebEx and recorded for archival access. Each session is meant to be a stand-alone module. Attendees can determine how many sessions and in what sequence they attend.

Learning Objectives
Session 1:  Introduction to PubMed.  By the end of the session students will be able to:

  • Explain about the difference between PubMed and MEDLINE

  • Run a PubMed search and assess search retrieval

  • Analyze search details

  • Customize with My NCBI

  • Discover and employ three ways to search for a known citation

  • Search using the Clinical Queries search tool

Session 2:  MeSH. By the end of this session students will be able to:

  • Recognize the 4 different types of MeSH terms and how searchers can benefit from using MesH to build a search

  • Explain the structure of the MeSH database and the components of a MeSH record.

Session 3:  Automatic Term Mapping (ATM).  By the end of this session students will be able to:

  • Describe the process of Automatic Term Mapping (ATM)

  • Explain why searching with keywords in PubMed can be an effective approach to searching

  • Analyze search results and describe what is and is not included in Search Details

  • Describe how to determine if a phrase is Indexed in PubMed

Session 4:  Building and Refining Your Search.  By the end of this session students will be able to:

  • Use the tools and features built into PubMed that are designed to help you search more effectively, including the Filters Sidebar and topic-specific subsets.

  • Build searches using History and the Index.

  • Explain MeSH heading and Subheading Coordination

Session 5: Customization with My NCBI.  By the end of this session students will be able to:

  • Describe the advantages of creating a My NCBI account

  • Manage and manipulate their My NCBI page content using the features and options available in My NCBI

  • Locate and apply available filters on the filter sidebar

  • Select and set up right-side filters using your My NCBI account

  • Create a custom filter

Session 6: Using Evidence-Based Search Features. By the end of this session students will be able to:

  • Locate MeSH vocabulary and PubMed features that facilitate finding evidence from research

  • Define evidence in the context of literature searching for clinical medicine

  • Explain how study designs are indexed in MeSH

  • Locate and use PubMed Clinical Queries

  • Locate and use NICHSR Comparative Effectiveness Research Query page

  • Explain what is included in PubMed Health

  • Customize My NCBI filters to locate specific publication types
