Data Literacy for the Busy Librarian*
This class is adapted and updated from the existing virtual, synchronous course “Data Literacy for the Busy Librarian” (4.00 CE), so that it can be used in an in-person format.
Data literacy is increasingly important for librarians, especially for those working in clinical and health science settings. This course will review standards for file naming, file storing, and metadata, as well as appropriate repositories for storage, preservation and sharing. Additionally, participants will learn key concepts such as the data life cycle, FAIR data principles, data management plans, and security/privacy considerations. Participants will have opportunities to work in small and large groups to practice the skills together.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this class, students will be able to:

- Recommend file naming conventions and file formats based on best practices
- Apply selected metadata standards to a given dataset in order to facilitate better sharing of data and understands the rationale for metadata
- Identify appropriate data repositories for a given dataset
- Discuss potential solutions for datasets with security/privacy issues (HIPAA) and develop an understanding of intellectual property and privacy and confidentiality issues when it comes to sharing data
- Articulate FAIR principles and explain data sharing, data citations, and data journals
- Explain Data Management Plan (DMP) requirements of funding agencies (NIH, NSF) and evaluate a DMP for adherences to funding agency requirements
- Understand and apply best practices for data visualization
