How to Have Fun Teaching with Technology

For more information or to schedule this course, please contact Molly Higgins <m.higgins@stonybrook.edu>.

This face-to-face course provides pedagogical and technological training in the basics of creating digital learning objects, such as videos and annotated texts. Librarians are often asked to teach and to create digital learning objects, yet few of us received pedagogical training in Library School, much less training in instructional design. The goals of this CE course are two fold—first to discuss best practices for translating in-person instruction sessions into synchronous and asynchronous online instruction tools; and second, to give participants meaningful exposure with multiple instructional design platforms (Adobe Connect, Articulate Storyline, Jing, and Guide on the Side). Participants will leave the session prepared to choose the appropriate tools to match their instructional design needs.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will recognize best practices for translating in person classes into synchronous and asynchronous digital learning tools.

  • Participants will gain meaningful exposure with multiple instructional design platforms (Articulate Storyline, Guide on the Side, Jing/Camtasia, Edventure Builder)

  • Participants will understand the strengths and weaknesses of multiple instructional design tools and recognize different contexts in which different tools are appropriate.
