Prescription for Success: Consumer Health on the Web*

This online only class is an introduction to consumer health information and will cover concepts related to health literacy, the information-seeking behaviors of consumers, the basics of MedlinePlus.gov, ClinicalTrials.gov and other reliable websites such as drug and supplement information.

Learning Objectives


  1. Identify information-seeking behaviors of consumers and selected web sites useful for answering consumer's health questions

  2. Familiarize and practice with the National Library of Medicine resources for disease-specific information, drugs and supplements, and other consumer health information resources

  3. Practice utilizing these resources to assist consumers with health questions

 

Agenda 

4-week Moodle version (4 MLA CE):

This course consists of 4 modules. The length of time to complete each module is variable, but each week’s reading and required work should take between 1-2 hours. The course will be open for 4 weeks of instruction and at least one additional week for review. The modules are:

Week 1: Consumer Health Information Basics and NLM Resources
Health Literacy
Health information seeking behaviors of consumers and patients
Evaluation health information
MedlinePlus and other NLM consumer health resources
Discussions

Week 2: Quality Health Information (non-NLM)
Other quality health websites
Cancer information 
Health-related associations and lab tests
Discussions and activities

Week 3: The Reference Interview and Hands-on Practice with Resources
Practice with specific resources
Practice with reference questions

Week 4: Practice with Real-life Reference Questions

Facility Requirements  

For this online course, students must have access to the Internet, with up-to-date browsers. Students will need to register for an account with the NNLM Moodle course management system.
