Courses Tagged DEIA

Educational offerings tagged DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, and Accessibility) include content that addresses diversity, equity, inclusivity, and/or accessibility. The tag is intended to facilitate discoverability of diverse content in the educational offerings approved for MLA CE.

Tagging courses in this way serves the MLA Board Education Strategic Goal of strengthening MLA's educational curriculum by "ensuring diversity is a thread that is reflected throughout, in areas such as the pool of instructors, content and perspectives" and "ensuring inclusion and accessibility to MLA offerings."

Courses are tagged DEIA following guidance in:

Vardell, E., & Charbonneau, D. H. (2020). Applying a health justice framework to examine health and social justice in LIS course offerings. In B. St. Jean, G. Jindal, Y. Liao, & P. T. Jaeger (Eds.), Roles and Responsibilities of Libraries in Increasing Consumer Health Literacy and Reducing Health Disparities (Advances in Librarianship, Volume 47). Emerald Publishing Limited.

MLA strongly encourages all instructors who submit a course for MLA CE approval to address diversity content and perspectives in their course, and we ask them to describe how their course will do this or explain why diversity considerations are not relevant. Courses tagged DEIA explicitly include DEIA content.

The Education Steering Committee DIA working group created and applied tagging guidelines for existing MEDLIB-ED courses in May 2022. MLA staff use these guidelines for tagging new courses.

If you think a course should or should not be tagged, please contact medlib-ed@mail.mlahq.org.
