Locating Information on Developmental Disabilities using NLM and Other Resources*

The American Library Association recognizes the needs of those who have developmental disabilities and strongly believes that "Libraries should provide training opportunities for all staff and volunteers in order to sensitize them to issues affecting persons with disabilities and to teach effective techniques for providing services for users with disabilities and for working with colleagues with disabilities." This class will provide an introduction to developmental disabilities, tools to evaluate quality websites and learn about NLM resources to answer health related needs, caregiver information, ideas for programming, as well as ways to provide awareness to the community regarding developmental disabilities.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will identify quality consumer health resources for finding information and services on developmental disabilities

  2. Participants will be able to speak appropriately with patrons and patron families with developmental disabilities

  3. Participants will be able to develop programs for those with developmental disabilities


Agenda 

Read the pre-class readings, watch/attend the webinar, complete class exercises OR attend the class in person. A list of pre-class readings will be distributed prior to the webinar portion of the class.(5 minutes) Introductions(5 minutes) Overview of developmental disabilities(10 minutes) Evaluation of web resources(20 minutes) NLM and other government resources that address developmental disabilities(10 minutes) Caregiver resources and needs(10 minutes) Program and service ideas and consideration and discussion(3 minutes) wrap up and hands-on exercises assignment (in person class, hands on exercises will be conducted)
